Tuscany Portraits at Castello di Casole

27 December 2014

The Castello di Casole is a masterpiece. It is the venue that Lupe and Jose, our protagonists today, chose for the photographs of their engagement session.

It is located in the province of Siena, in southern Tuscany. The area is almost entirely untouched by human intervention. Coming here I’ve met very few cars; miles and miles of roads surrounded by fields and rolling hills scorched by the heat of August.I realise that this is an ideal place for exploring Tuscany. I am just a few minutes away from the beautiful Abbey of San Galgano and the centre of Siena. In 40 minutes I can be in the heart of Florence, and going the other way, on the golden beaches of the Maremma.

The colours of early autumn are beautiful: a palette from yellow to brown, mottled by the dull green of the cypresses and vineyards heavy with grapes ready to be harvested.Once arrived, I realised that the castle, in fact, is not here. Or rather, it’s gone. The estate is an ancient Tuscan village that the American ownership has carefully restored without upsetting. It’s like being inside a beautiful postcard.

Imagine many houses that run along dirt roads around the central structure, the very heart of the estate, among cultivated fields and vineyards strictly ordered. There isn’t asphalt, the houses are built of stone, with flower gardens of roses around. The only sounds are the songs of the cicadas and the wind rustling through the trees. A little paradise in miniature. The best of Tuscany selected and proposed to customers around the world. Truly a treat!

I understand those who spend the whole holiday, or honeymoon, in the property, and never come out. The atmosphere is so relaxed, cosy and luxurious that it’s easy to relax and rest. The spa and the beautiful swimming pool seem to be the perfect excuse to avoid feelings of guilt!

But I do not have time to relax and enjoy this beauty. I’m here to take pictures, and my first thought is that I have to find right places to do it. It did not take long. Every corner of this venue is suitable for stunning photographs. A beautiful avenue of cypress trees, ordered meadows and the distant hills are just a few backgrounds for images to remember for a long time.

This couple came from Dallas, Texas, for the photos and to spend a few days in the company of the closest family members. They were guests of the castle a long time ago. They fell in love at first sight with the place and decided to buy one of the villas in the resort. Just think about it! It’s been a pleasure to watch them as they posed for the photo shoot. I rarely perceive such a strong empathy in the couples I picture. The sunset light is ideal for photo full of atmosphere and charm. The colours are bright, and the sun enhances all that it touches. The warm glow envelops the forms of landscapes and trees, and even the bodies of these two young lovers. Two hours fly! I would have liked very much to know them better.

Too bad, it would have been another great opportunity to return to the Castle of Casole!
